(Studio BOI) – Graphic Design Studio, Studio BOI

NOVVAVE

I believe that the city itself inspires. Could you tell me about the city you are living in?

We live in Bergen, Norway’s second largest city, but still a small town on the west coast, well-known for it’s beautiful scenery and rainy climate with an average of 240 days of rain per year. Bergen has a rich and exciting cultural scene with a lot of up-and-coming artists, designers and musicians.

Can you introduce your space and the scenery that looks out of the window?

Our studio is located in an old sardine factory, USF Verftet, now turned into a cultural house with studios and offices for professionals working in the art and cultural industry.  When we look outside our windows we look straight into the sea, which is quite beautiful. Most days it’s foggy and gloomy, but now in the spring it’s sunny and nice.

Do you have a specific shop or place to go to when you go to work or leave? If so, for what reasons?

We usually walk through the small city centre on our way to and from work. Sometimes I grab a coffee at the local coffee roaster Bergen Kaffebrenneri, eat lunch at the lovely café Nobel Bopel or grab a beer and look at records at Apollon, a combined bar and record store.

Is there a place of inspiration to recommend to the people of Seoul? Please introduce.

Bergen is surrounded by seven mountains and it’s always nice to take a hike when you need a change of scenery, overview and inspiration.

I want to hear about your inspiration. Where, when, and at what moment.

We continuously draw inspiration from our surroundings: Nature, art, films, music and people. When we are starting a new project we always dive into the material – listening to the music, reading the lyrics and talk to the musicians to find a starting point for the idea development. I don’t believe inspiration is something that magically appears. It’s all about finding methods that get you into the right mindset.

As a designer, What if you expressed Razika’s music in one sentence?

We find Razikas music to be honest; both vulnerable, independent and funny at the same time.

Can you tell us about the concept story or episode of the album cover design?

Based on their honest lyrics about love, self-doubt and everyday life, as well as a good dose of self-irony, each song received a visual translation in the form of a still life photography where the objects are Razika’s personal belongings. The result is a collection of both the beautiful, ugly and ordinary, gathered in a gatefold cover with a 24-page booklet, printed inner sleeves and white vinyl.

Which song do you recommend personally?

That’s a tricky one. It’s impossible to choose only one song. «En sjanse til» is very catchy, while «D esje meg» stands out and is the only song where drummer Embla does the vocals.

What do you usually listen to? Please tell me if you have a song that inspires you when you work. Do you have any favorite artists or albums?

We’re pretty omnivorous when it comes to music, it all depends on the mood and what type of work we are doing. In our studio we listen to everything from pop, soul, funk, jazz and hip hop. Personally, when I’m doing focus work I like to listen to more ambient, melancholic soundscapes – composers like Jóhann Jóhannsson, Nils Frahm and Max Richter to mention some. If I need something more upbeat Unknown Mortal Orchestra and Mac DeMarco are always a good fit.

The name of our record shop is “NOVVAVE(No Wave)” because we are interested in dealing with good music that can be loved for a long time beyond the chart rankings and trends. Can you tell me what “NOVVAVE” means in your creative work?

If we were to translate NOVVAVE into our work I would say ignoring current design trends and rather focus on the craft. Knowledge of typography, grids and composition. Strong ideas are more important than just “cool” graphics. Good design withstand the tooth of time and works from 50 years ago can still feel fresh and contemporary.
